Emergency Shelter,
Food Bank and
Community Meals
Safe Harbor is an emergency homeless shelter owned and operated by the Lighthouse since 2008. Located on West New Castle Street in the heart of Butler's downtown area, Safe Harbor provides five emergency shelter apartments for individuals or families. Our goal in operating the Safe Harbor facility is to provide emergency shelter for up to 60 days to individuals and families who find themselves suddenly homeless. Once someone is accepted into the Safe Harbor facility, the needs of that individual are assessed and the process begins to help him/her to receive income through employment, Supplemental Security Income, or public assistance. We also assist residents of Safe Harbor in finding affordable housing and work closely with volunteers from Catholic Charities to help residents learn life skills.
Food Bank
Since 1985, the Lighthouse has distributed over 5.3 million pounds of food and served over 182,000 meals. Every other Thursday night and Friday morning, volunteers gather at the Lighthouse to help distribute food to families and individuals in need. Prior to the food bank opening, we offer a free community meal in our dining room.
If this is your first time attending a food bank, you will need:
- proof of identification
- proof of income
- proof of the individuals residing with you
